The Hidden Cost of "Good Enough" Color

Most print operations can identify a major color failure. A rejected run, a customer complaint, or a costly reprint gets attention quickly.

The harder costs to see are the small, repeated disruptions that become normal: extra make-ready sheets, repeated press checks, last-minute adjustments, approval delays, ink changes, rush deliveries, and jobs that take just a little longer than expected.

Individually, these moments may seem manageable. Across hundreds or thousands of jobs, they can quietly erode capacity and profitability.


"Good enough" color often depends on skilled people making smart decisions under pressure. But when a process relies heavily on individual judgment, consistency can be difficult to repeat. One operator may know exactly how to compensate for a familiar stock or press condition; another may need more time to reach the same result.

A stronger color-management process brings more of that knowledge into the workflow itself. Defined targets, regular calibration, measured verification, and documented procedures reduce uncertainty before a job reaches the pressroom.

The goal is not perfection for perfection's sake. It is predictability.

When teams know what acceptable color looks like, how to measure it, and what action to take when output drifts, they spend less time reacting. That can reduce avoidable waste, protect production schedules, and help employees focus on work that adds value rather than correcting preventable problems.

For many printers, the first step is simply to ask a better question: not "Did we have a color problem?" but "How much time and material did we spend managing color uncertainty this month?"

That answer can reveal opportunities hiding in plain sight.
